I haven't seen Blithe Spirit - yet; but I have taped it, am looking forward to seeing it; it really sounded like fun.

And I'm glad you have been having fun, too - Wow! Angela Lansbury!

Has anyone seen what Top Gear is planning?

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/northern_ireland/8163272. stm

Who else would think of such a thing? Sounds fun - though I'm glad I won't be there. Smile

They're letting those three loose on their NEW sewer system! They must be completely mad, the Top Gear lot are likely to wreck it.

I watched a Swedish version of Wallander that the BBC were showing on one of their digital channels (subtitled) and really enjoyed it. I may even pick up a few words of Swedish from it. There were a few places though where I thought 'They'd never be allowed to do that on a UK production'.

Probably. Remember when they set fire to the carwash? Smile

I've seen a few of the Swedish Wallander - starring Rolf Lassgård as Wallander. TV4 made another set with another actor - nothing against him, but I'd got used to Lassgård, so I didn't watch (or tape) those. I'm curious about the Kenneth Branagh/BBC Wallander, though.

We finally found a friend who had the last three seasons of Babylon 5 as well as the movies, so we'll be busy with that for a while.

My mom turned me on to a series called Leverage. It's a group of thieves and con artists being all Robin Hood-esque. Absolutely hilarious.

I hope you'll enjoy them - things really get going in Season 3, and in Season 4 there rarely seems like there's time to breathe. Caused, no doubt, in great measure by the fact that J Michael Straczynski didn't know if there was going to be a Season 5, and so tried to finish off the main story-lines. The pacing in Season 5 is much calmer.

I think it's interesting that he planned the series to be five seasons, and to follow the build-up of a novel:

Season 1: Introduction
Season 2: Rising Action
Season 3: Complication
Season 4: Climax
Season 5: Denoument

(I think this was it; please make allowances for a faulty memory.)

I finally watched something! Two different versions of 12th Night, one by Kenneth Branagh's Renaissance Theater Co. and the other by his Renaissance Films. The latter had Helena Bonham Carter as Olivia and Imelda Staungton as her maid Maria.

I am taking two theater mad pre-teens to see the play next week and was trying to decide which video to use as their preview. The second won hands down, because they used St. Michael's Mount and Lanhydroc in Cornwall as the stand-ins for Illyria and because they'll find it easier to understand.

I love British films which feature the cream of the theater establishment ... and it's fun to track down the connections. The Duke in the film was played by Toby Stephens (who I saw many years ago at the RSC in Coriolanus) who is Maggie Smith's son.

Tomorrow night I will probably watch Snow Cakes because it stars Alan Rickman and it was right there on the shelf with Twelfth Night..

Watched 'A Celibration of Classic MGM Film Musicals', part of the proms season last night, and it looked like it would have been fun to have been there. But at least at home you can sing along to your hearts content without being shushed.

Mamma Mia! Not sure if this counts since it is not technically TV but we saw it at our local theater and then watched the DVD. I just can't resist a musical.

I LOVE Leverage!!! I was raving about it last season but no one had heard of it. If you like that then try Warehouse 13 - it has a similar quirky humour to it, and some interesting takes on steampunk technology

http://www.syfy.com/warehouse13/

Another new series thats only 2 eps in but seems worthwhile staying with is Defying Gravity - described as Grey's Anatomy in space (I have some issues with their consistency of applying correct physics principles but other than that good) and it has an interesting cast lineup

Been watching Warehouse 13 (I'd call it a steampunk X-Files), and Eureka on Syfy (I hate, hate, hate the name change). I tried Defying Gravity, but just couldn't get into it. One of the guys at work watches W13 and Eureka too, so we chat about them at work the day after.

I wholeheartedly agree!!! If you're already watching the channel, you probably also read Sci-Fi and are smart enough to understand that it means Science Fiction (not to mention how to pronounce it). Just another way to dumb down America. Sorry if I stepped on Pollyana's toes.

I don't think it's just America - I hate it when a completely meaningless name-change occurs in whatever sort of company, as if changing their name actually was an achievment in itself, as if it of itself was proof of any other change than the mere name change! I hate hollow, meaningless name-changes! (draws breathe) Sorry, pet peeve!

As for Syfy - what in the name of all of creation does it mean - and why would it attract anybody that sci-fi wouldn't?

I hope I'm not offending Pollyanna either - but this is not really abusing the channel or its contents, merely the name. Say you don't mind, Pollyanna - please? (flutters eyelashes fetchingly)

For our second anniversary we got several seasons of 'The L-Word'. Very much soap opera with lots of skin but it _is_ a nice change to have all the heteros be minor characters.

Well, what bugs me about is that they seem to be actively trying to distance themselves from the audience that made them successful, to try and pick up a more mainstream (particularly female) audience. They seem to have ignored that their science fiction liking audience is going to be irritated at being distanced from (what, do we smell funny or something?).

And don't they think this potential, new audience will probably notice that they are watching sci-fi - sooner or later, hopefully - whatever they call the channel? Or is their target audience stupid females? One can but wonder...

Yes. And for dessert, maybe see a normal, non-angst-nor-bed-hopping, long term relationship.

Actually, considering what passes for TV here, it would be nice to have that in *any* kind of relationship. Maybe I'm being too cynical.

LOL

Actually I was at a dinner party and happened to mention what it would be nice to see one stable long term relationship on the show. Everyone got kinda quiet and then someone said: 'Do you actually know anyone who hasn't had an affair?' My partner and I looked at each other and said 'us.' Talk about an strained moment.

Maybe next time I'll ask for M*A*S*H I remember that show being rather harmless, although totally het. Wink

With a few exceptions, I love sci-fi. On the other hand, the channel was losing me because it became the Horror channel. If the name change means they are going back to their roots, I can live with the stupid spelling.

I think Eureka is lots of fun; I will have to try Warehouse 13.

Well, this is a month late-- I've been working on a paper and haven't really been on the forum much recently-- but thanks, LRK! Yep... it was pretty much amazing.

Aand, to keep this on topic... just watched an episode of New Tricks, a BBC detective show that is on after Are You Being Served on the PBS station. It is quite intriguing without being too... much, you know?
I enjoy it, at any rate.

I love the Italian Job! I just recently watched it—well two weeks ago actually. A show I more recently watched is Myth Buster, interesting and a bit funny, and I watched this while I was at a hotel in Zion Canyon. My family and I have been on a western trip to the Grand Canyon, Zion, Arches and Brice Canyon(not quit in that order though.)and just got back last night at 1:30 am. I will post some pictures later on.

A sad farewell:

Hands out handkerchiefs & chocolate to David Tennant Doctor Who-fans.

(Even though I haven't seen any of it yet - am taping it, though - I feel a bit teary-eyed myself... )

I've been watching "V" which is sort of a remake of the mini-series from the 80's (that I loved and I own DVD's of "V" and "V: The Final Battle"). I'm enjoying it quite a bit so far; I'm interested to see how technology and life since the 80's will affect it.

I saw V in the 80s (of course), but then re-watched it quite recently and was surprised at how much I liked it. How does the new one compare? Characters etc?

The characters are definately different; you can draw parallels with some (mostly with switched gender), but not with all. I do like the new characters and think they fit better in our time than if the old characters were just thrust into our times.

Here's a link to the website (where they have some full episodes online): http://abc.go.com/shows/v

Thanks - that actually does look good. And I think a re-imagining is probably better than just a re-make, because that just felt pointless to me. Though your talk of "our times" makes me depressed - I don't think the 80s were such a long time ago! It makes me feel old... (Sniffle)

I'm thinking of taping this when it arrives in Sweden - as it surely will, sooner or later.
