There was one incredibly elderly lady we saw at tea, bent almost literally double, tottering along on her cane, wearing an odd sparkly cardie thing that I would buy in a minute in a vintage clothing shop. We decided that she’d sung in the chorus there before the war. The First World War. And has been coming every year since, having given up singing after her fiancé’s wood-canvas-and-baling-twine RFC plane was shot down. She is also possibly the Countess Flatfootflooziewithafloyfloy

Haha. Brilliant. You are Brilliant.

Re: homeopathy. You know, it is odd, but ever since I started reading this blog, I keep noticing things, references to it, mentions of Arnica or what have you in books (fiction books), in France when I was sick and my professor took me to the pharmacy she was telling me that it is all homeopathic stuff there and so on and so forth. All over the place. Life is funny like that... but I might have to check a homeopathy book out from the library next time I'm shelving and notice one...
Next thing you know, I'll check out some knitting books as well-- they ARE on the shelf just opposite and down a bit.
You all are a bad influence on me! Or a good one!
Or in a good way. Something like that.
[Exactly which remains to be seen, I suppose]

YAAY indeed!

Since she lives in Manhattan however she has special dispensation to have a personal trainer and still be a normal human being.

I was reading an article the other day--probably in the Times, I expect--about why New Yorkers tend to not be quite so fat as the rest of us lazy Americans. The prevailing theory was that folks who live in NYC do a hell of a lot of WALKING, no matter who they are. Even without trainers and gyms, I suspect if I were still living in Chicago I'd probably be considerably less hefty than I am--even though I had a car when I lived there the object was always to park it as quickly as I could in whatever space I could find, and walk however many blocks were required to get wherever I was going. NY is even more so, on all my trips there I've come home with aching calves.

And good arm definition takes work! Bravo for Hannah. Smile Mine comes from a combo of weight lifting and cat wrestling...

*whimper* I made the mistake of reading the Bowen article.

I've been struggling with shoulder and jaw pain for years. I've been to physical therapy for it which was lovely, but only for as long as it took me to drive home from the clinic. This? This sounds wonderful and perfect and, dare I say it, helpful.

The problem is that I don't live in the UK! And a quick couple of Google searches are not revealing any kind of listing of Bowen practioners here in the States. I suppose even if there were any, they'd be in the usual places--the big coast cities and, say, Arizona, none of which do me much good.

Anyone have any insights on how I might go about finding such a place near me(or anywhere not in Australia or Europe)?

I'll ask my Bowen lady; I know that Bowen is *spreading* so it might arrive in your area.

And have you tried homeopathy . . . ? Acupuncture/pressure if you don't like needles?

Here are two websites with practitioner info: www.bowenworkacademyusa.com and www.bowendirectory.com. Both list practitioners in Michigan.

This comes very timely, as I noticed when I had my recent shiatsu appointment that a Bowenwork practitioner had just moved into the building. (I have been remiss about going to shiatsu, and my neck and shoulders have been letting me know about it. And some sciatica has cropped up too, and all this was aggravated by driving to Massachusetts and back.) I thought about going in and checking things out, but as usual had no time. The description on Robin's link--which I will forward to a friend who is in the throes of a wicked fibromyalgia flareup--reminded me of Feldenkrais method bodywork, which I did briefly 25 years ago and liked. I'll have to look into this now that there is a practitioner in the neighborhood.

And he came very nearly bounding out of the dog bed tonight to eat his supper standing up. All his supper.

Good for Darkness. I hope his brother took a lesson from this outstanding example.

Peter and I both noticed the startling absence of frilly young things on smug elderly gentlemen’s arms: Peter opined lugubriously that wealthy elderly gentlemen are feeling the economic crunch too and are taking their wives to the opera this year.

They took the frilly young things to the opera?? One would think they'd find something else to do with them while they sent their wives to the opera . . . Smile

Thanks to you both. I'll definitely check out those websites. And I'm afraid it never occurred to me to try acupuncture/pressure. I wonder if my insurance would cover that? That'd be nice.

I don't know about the insurance part, but I started with shiatsu massage years ago because of TMJ and neck and shoulder tension. I went weekly for a couple of months to get things loosened up and now go every month or two--not often enough, but the vet bills come first! It has helped me a lot. Good luck!
