I've been watching a lot of the German version of PBS.

Most recent films:

Sophie Schol - the university student who helped print anti-war lit. Great film, hard ending.

Margarete Steiff - about a women handicapped from Polio in the 19th century. She went on to become a successful toy maker. Great film, but I don't think they have it with English Subtitles.

Susan Boyle on Britain's Got Talent. I saw it on the news and had to go back and find it on You Tube. What an amazing voice and what a wonderful story!

Wow. I already know just enough about both of those women to know I'd like to see both of these. Sophie Scholl was a true hero. And we've got a sizable collection of Steiff animals at our museum, Margarete was quite the innovator in the world of toys. Guess I'll just have to learn German.... Smile

THIS CLIP:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9lp0IWv8QZY

Just saw it on my friend's Facebook... followed the link, watched the video. This is unbelievable.

Approx. 7 min video clip from Susan Boyle singing on Britain's Got Talent...

<<Incroyable> ou <<invraisemblable!>> might be more appropriate reactions, given her choice of song. Just listen and watch this!!!

Black Bear,

The Sophie Scholl movie I saw is on DVD internationally, if you want to see it.

Since you are into history, I have a Steiff question for you. Who invented the Teddy Bear? All US website have no mention of Steiff on them, but it would seem to me from the movie and from German websites that she did.

Thanks,

Rebecca

p.s. It's off-thread but this makes me think of something .... A few months ago President Obama said in a speech that 'Americans invented cars'. It was on the German news and all my students had fun poking fun at me. Gottleib Diamler (sp) invented the car. Ford invented the combustion engine.

I love Chuck. I also love Burn Notice, and the new season starts in June (yay!). Also watch In Plain Sight (I enjoy quirky heroines who are also competent at their jobs). And as a person who has always had a weird fascination for the macabre crime stuff, I watch all the CSIs and Criminal Minds. I know, I'm bad. I have been watching The Sarah Connor Chronicles, but I really didn't like the season finale ending. I will, of course, see the new Terminator movie sometime this summer. Also the new Star Trek movie that just premiered on Friday. I've been a Trekkie since Season One of The Original Series (yep, I'm that old).

Argh, sorry Rebecca--I must have at some point let this thread get below my radar!

The tradition of jointed stuffed bears starts in multiple places at once, as I understand it. The idea of the "teddy"--IE Theodore Roosevelt bear, an upright doll-like bear--starts with the Ideal Toy Company in the US and quickly spreads to other makers of dolls and soft toys. But German toymakers have always been the sort of apex of the industry, and I think Steiff's superior quality put it at the forefront of the teddy bear boom in the US pretty quickly.

Not related to what I'm watching, of course, so I'll add that I just watched a great documentary called Born Into Brothels, about a photography project involving kids born in the red light district of Calcutta. Highly recommend, if you're a documentary fan.

I just saw the new Star Trek film, and found it to be great fun. Enough in-jokes to amuse those who get them, but not so much that it would be incomprehensible to non-trekkies.

My hubby and I have been watching Babylon 5 on Hulu.com starting from the pilot. I've seen some here and there, but never all of it in sequence; my brother was kind of obsessed with it for a while, so we thought we'd give it a try over the summer. We're loving it so far, but there are only two of the 5 seasons on Hulu, so I don't know what we'll do then; I guess we may have to see if we can rent the rest somewhere.

Too bad you're not a bit closer, I've got the entire thing.

I love B5, prefer it to Star Wars/Trek. Make sure, while you're hunting down the rest of it, to look for Crusade. It's a spin-off series, after B5 that's really excellent. Also keep an eye out for the movies. They're in the continuity of it as well (though if you don't manage to get them -all- in a row, you'll be okay).

Yeah, too bad! Are you sure you weren't planning on doing some summer theatre in Colorado or something? Wink Ohh, but that just made me remember that I will see my brother in Arizona in a couple of weeks and maybe he has it on DVD; I'll have to ask.

As to Crusade, I actually manged to see all of that one in order already, though I might want to see it again after watching all of Babylon 5.

I love B5! And I saw it in a really odd order - starting with the two last episodes of season three, then season four, back to the rest of season three, then season five, A Call to Arms, In the Beginning, the pilot, seasons one-two... And what's really marvellous is how well it holds together - I usually say that it probably could be watched diagonally. Smile Anyway, the more I see it, the more I love it - I'm at the "passionately adore" stage at the moment - I have yet to see Crusade and a few of the other movies... Oh, I've seen Lost Tales as well - pity there won't be more of those...

Erika, if you happened to be passing by Sweden we could have a B5 marathon... Smile

I am indeed watching Burn Notice (so much fun!) and am now looking forward to Eureka, another fun show. I may end up watching G4 during the San Diego Comic-Con, since I can never go. Even when I was an Eisner judge back in 2005, I couldn't go (<grump>). I watched some of G4's SDCC coverage last year.

Look at what's coming up on BBC:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4o2Usu544SE

for those lucky enough, obviously, to have access to it - but still something to look forward to - eventually. Including glimpses of the upcoming Doctor Who. I wonder a bit, though, about the very emotional Emma... I hope it works in context.

If that's the Doctor's new costume then they're trying to give him an older look.

Enjoyed the last Torchwood series, only hoping it isn't the last Torchwood series now that Russell T Davis had decided to go to the States leaving it and the Sarah Jane Adventures in limbo.

What I Am Watching: video on theatre website of what I SAW yesterday....
The final performance (sad face) of BLITHE SPIRIT. On BROADWAY. With ANGELA LANSBURY. And many other famous and talented people. And ANGELA LANSBURY. It was unbelievable. I would go again... except it closed. It was a rather short run, though, only opened in March. And the Shubert was packed. Oh well. Anyway, it was brilliant.

Have you all seen the movie with Rex Harrison and Margaret Rutherford et al?

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0038363/

good movie.
