*sympathies on icky weather*
I am still amused that you have icky *wet* weather and we have icky *dry* weather.

Barbed wire: yes. Evil incarnate. We have rolled up wire here at home... which was apparently used at the army bases in WW2. ..... Yes, I have relatives that *hoard*.

I'll keep an eye out for *barbed wire-proof dog coats*. Wink

I think re wet and cold and dry and cold it is a matter of degree of cold. If you are reliably beneath zero degrees centigrade, you cannot have damp, as water is solid. So you will have dry cold. If you waver around that point, it can still be damp and you can have frozen locks - particularly if you have poured water in your locks (do try to dry those out, by the way)! All this from someone who has seen no snow so far this winter and is grumbling that the temperature will fall to 9C this weekend: gosh, it might get chilly out there! Should I wear a hat?

And I don’t want to think about the depth of despair that would drive anyone to steal frayed, hairy, pawprinted dog bedding. Hmmm. That would have been me aged 7! My best friend lived in the country and was ferried to and from school by her mum in a tiny hairy dog-smelling renault. God how I loved the smell of that car - it meant ponies and dogs, downland and midnight feasts, excitement & friendship - I loved that smell!

The weather; I refuse to talk about it, and I'm hoping it will go away. Snowing here again today. Our pavement is sheet ice at least an inch thick. Despair.

Very sorry that mad Hampshire based lunatics have plastered barbed wire across the landscape. I may need to send more G&B to help you cope/keep you eating Smile

We have wind here. Lots of gusty wind that makes my windows rattle, and the cover on the outside access to the basement jump, and the big tree in the back yard is dancing. Oh commas, I wish it wouldn't do that. (Tends to drop bits of itself across my driveway and dangerously close to my house when it gets excited...)

It was in the mid-50s today. Would have felt a lot nicer if it weren't for the wind trying to blow you over every time you braved the outside.

Thank you for the chestnut mare story. What a treat to be whickered at for so long when un-cooperation was expected. Very windy here in Philadelphia today as well, no immediate dangers for me, as far as I can tell. I am grateful for that. A dancing tree near my dwelling would be rather scary I hope it only danced and doesn't get carried away!

I’m worrying I should be ordering a spare hellhound coat because the one Chaos wore last winter after he was ill has some barbed-wire tears*** in it and it’s no longer waterproof.

Red Green would just duct tape the jeebus out of that coat - unless you don't want to be known as "American woman with hellhounds, soggy cardboard boxes, home jungle, and duct taped pet-wear?" I understand.

Well, you can have pretty wet sticky snow right down to the high 20's; that superdry powder Robin's talking about is more a teens and single digits thing... Smile

I'm going to have to see if the Eye on Sky guys have anything to say about wet and dry cold. I mean I've experienced both in plentitude, but they are scientists.

Duct tape, my thought precisely. One bit on the outside, another on the inside so it doesn't stick to fur. And yes, I did consider that it was just too American a solution.

Speaking of duct tape, one writer suggests a strip of tape to cover the lock once you've got it dried out, to keep it dry.

Which of the horses you've written about is most like you in that previous life?

I love the Red Green Show! And I third the duct tape solution; my husband used to make messenger bags entirely out of duct tape and they were quite waterproof. On second thought, duct tape does tend to go stiff and lose it's stickiness in really cold temps.

Completely off topic but I found a recommendation for dog food on a small family dog breeder's site.

"We feed Orijen Dog food. The concept is simple: include the
fresh, whole foods that nature evolved dogs to eat (in
correct ratio and quantity), and exclude ingredients like
cereal grains that are not part of the natural diet.
Orijen features fresh regional ingredients in a Biologically
Appropriate ratio of 70 percent meat, 30 percent fruit and
vegetables and zero grain (70/30/0)."

Apparently it is a Canadian company and only available in the UK through on-line companies but when you're dealing with grain allergies, it may be something to keep in mind.

I read a piece in The New Yorker some years ago about people working in Amazonia. The women said that zipper-lock bags were the things they couldn't do without, but the men all voted for duct tape. Looks like a pattern here.

I just came back from my biannual* visit to Alaska (there's this conference I attend that is held in February and October; I don't know why they didn't pick something like February and JULY). It was interesting to see how I adapted fairly quickly to being up there (I was waiting outside for my friend to come pick me up from the airport and thinking, "Hey, it's not too bad here," and then found that it was multiple degrees below zero Fahrenheit....), and enjoyed the weather. Lots of hiking and walking around outside, and enjoying the snow and moderate (for Alaska in Feb.) weather (which by the time I left was back up to a mild 10 degrees ABOVE zero). Then I came home to the Seattle/Tacoma area, which was in the 40s today... and was COLD the whole day. I always forget that reverse climate shock, like reverse culture shock, tends to be worse than the original trip.

* Maybe someday I'll just move up there, and then I will have significantly more disposable income.

Here's something to try to keep the locks from freezing: put refrigerator magnets over the locks to keep the moisture out. You can also get a windshield cover to prevent having to scrape your windshield glass; it could be used to keep the sun out and the car cool in summer, too. Not as good as a garage but helpful.

Who is the chucklehead who routinely puts a strand of barbed wire over and under the middle and/or bottom rail of a stile

This goes beyond stupidity and sounds like malice. What would be the legitimate purpose of such a thing? I can't see a sheep or a cow sneaking out through the bottom of a stile!

It's probably the farmer didn't want to stop at one side of the stile, fasten off the wire and then start again at the other side.

I did find this on the ramblers association website

Obstructed stiles
12. If a stile or gate is obstructed with, for example, barbed wire, the highway authority should be informed. Obstructing a right of way is a criminal offence, and highway authorities have a duty to enforce the removal of any obstructions. If a highway authority fails to take action a member of the public can require it to do so.

Of course Robin could carry a pair of wire cutters with her and save the highway authorities the trouble.

And here I sit in brilliant sunshine in inner London! It was lovely yesterday morning, too - it started sleetily snowing last night, though, but it had turned to rain by bedtime. And it is beautiful today.

O.k. here's help in the form of Rebecca's fix-it-all partner.

If you car locks freeze:

When the temperature warms up a bit, buy sewing-machine oil (found usually in a local craft/quilting store) and apply liberally in locks.

If the temp doesn't warm up, thaw out locks with a hair drier and then apply the sewing - machine oil.

She also suggests covering the rubber around the doors in glycerin. It keeps the moisture from freezing the door and the rubber together.

I asked her if she knew any other solutions. She said this was the best and most sure fire and also added that she does our in the Autumn on a hot sunny day. (Note, if she didn't do it I'd be standing out with the hair drier because I wouldn't be that prepared.)

On another note, I love Wolfgang the red VW Golf. You see, I have a student named Wolfgang and he isn't an easy person to get along with. Today when I was teaching at his business and he said one of his typical comments that set me on edge I simply pictured a red Golf with frozen locks. It worked wonders for my mood. Smile

(for clarification I'm an English teacher in Germany)

It doesn't get that cold here. It used to get that cold in Maine: my raincoat patches would start curling at the edges. But in this climate I have to be sure the coat is REALLY REALLY REALLY DRY first. Thank the gods for the Aga. :)

Same with snakes. Wink

I'm so pleased to not be living in the old house any more with its lack of flyscreens and holes the size of a small aircraft carrier in the walls.

(Funny true story - last week, on the day it got to about 115F, the little birds that nest in the walls of the old house came INTO the house and sat all day on the top of one of the bedroom doors. In the evening they flew out again.... First time ever. Smile Way too cute.)

8 C? Brrr! I suppose this is the wrong time to mention the beautiful 70 F we have been having lately? Smile It sounds wonderful (well actually it is really nice) but then we will have a freeze and all these nice little blooming plants and tender little leaves will curl up and die. Sigh. Of course, in the meantime it is terrific to walk around the garden and see the new shoots and admire the little buds and sit in the sun and forget that winter exists.

We had a lamb a few years ago who was the runt of her litter and she would just walk through the fence as if it weren't there. She was one that we had to bottle feed and so the dogs treated her as if she were also a dog and never bothered her. She would come up to the door and bleat to be let inside...

No, but here's the deal about the zip-lock bags: they keep the water, bugs, miscellaneous crawling or slithering things, BUGS, etc. on the outside and your food or possessions on the inside. In the rain forest this would be a good thing.

It was suggested that a person could remove the small round actual magnet that lives inside some types of fridge magnet and place it, alone, over the lock opening if she wanted to be less obvious. And if she were REALLY obsessive, she could paint the little round magnet with some of her car's touch-up paint. So--another PROJECT! Smile

One COULD just buy PLAIN MAGNETS. And since Wolfgang is a nice basic red, one could even buy PLAIN RED MAGNETS.

I can RESIST the idea of ANOTHER PROJECT. :)
