Karanga Honolulu (aka Lulu)
Name: Karanga Honolulu (aka “Lulu”)
Breed: Welsh Section B
Colour: Black roan
Age: 5 yrs
Favourite trick: Escaping the “Jenny Craig” paddock!
Favourite food: Anything edible.
Dreams of: Becoming a Dressage pony. (“Goofing off” is high on the list too.)

Real Name: Zoe
Nickname: the Zoe Cat (yes, I know it’s longer but that’s what she gets called)
Naming rationale: I just liked the name and it seemed to fit.
Occupation: 8-year-old fearless wonder (except for ice cream truck music oddly enough) who must know what is behind every closed door
Distinguishing features: fur, fur and more fur!
Breed: Medium hair, domestic tortoise shell
Brief bio: Born to a cat owned by a substitute teacher at my high school (where my mom is a librarian). Has one brother who went to the Spanish teacher. Acquired when she was 8 weeks old and more fluff than anything else.
Favorite food: sardines in jelly (which I try not to look at)
Most endearing bad habit: gently patting your nose with a paw in the morning when she thinks it time for you get up and put food in bowl
Last seen: investigating the plastic ring off the new jug of milk

This is Toyboy. He hatched in July 2006, while we were away at my sister’s wedding. That was back when I used to have a 3m x 1.5m aviary and a breeding flock of 20 lovebirds. I sold the flock when my husband and I got engaged and moved in together later that year, so Toyboy is the last chick I’m likely to raise.
In case you were wondering, he’s a peach-faced lovebird, carrying a recessive set of genes that makes him an apricot/blue-green colour rather than the normal red/bright green combination.* Of course, he still has the strongly opinionated personality of any lovebird!
* There are a LOT of colour mutations for peach-faces. It’s one of the reasons that they’re so popular with birdkeepers.

Real Name: Annie Panda
Naming rationale: Perfect hourglass marking between front legs like a Himalayan Black Bear. Couldn’t call her that, settled on another Asian bear. The ‘Annie’ is left over from Mom calling her Little Orphan Annie.
Nicknames: Perfect Panda, Panda Pants
Occupation: official Welcome Wagon representative for all new animals
Distinguishing features: perfect little girl bikini markings
Brief bio: We found her at the post office at four months being a Brave Little Toaster. Most likely from the village’s feral cat population.
Favorite food: a nice bit of cream
Most endearing bad habit: no bad habits, see nickname above

Xander in his first winter on the farm, in his favorite element, snow. Healthier but still very lean.
Real Name: Xander
Naming rationale: Just a nice guy without superpowers.
Nicknames: Xanderman, Snoot Doggy Dogg
Breed: old-fashioned Rough Collie
Occupation: Big Dog on the farm
Brief bio: Rescued at two years old, barely in time, he was heartworm positive and practically skeletal at 45 lbs. Happy and healthy now.
Distinguishing features: a natural-born gentleman, has an un-Collie-like ability to sleep through thunderstorms
Favorite passtime: hanging with his peeps, cat and human
Favorite food: Pup-peroni
Most endearing bad habit: barking to alert us of farm machinery in fields two miles away, inserting his snoot between cat and hand when a cat is getting petted
Last seen: grooming Panda

Real Name: Logan
Naming rationale: We were watching Dark Angel on DVD when he and his sibs showed up in our barn. We didn’t realize then we’d be keeping them.
Occupation: Rodent Control Officer
Distinguishing features: Chinchilla fur, looks fierce but is very gentle and shy
Brief bio: About 10 months old when he arrived on the farm with two of his littermates, Max, the leader, and Original Cindy. Max had led them to the Promised Land, escaping from our neighbors across the road. She refused to lead them back, so we reimbursed our neighbors who’d already had the trio to the vet for shots and neutering.
Favorite food: a nice bit of mouse
Last seen: observing the Hour of Scampering

As all bonfires are, ours was visited by a Firedragon. And she brought Junior. She’s probably lecturing him about going for the junk food (crappy grad school book cases) instead of the healthy 160-year-old old growth Douglas fir lath.
