Pegasus II  coming in 2014
Shadows coming in 2013

Dr Horrible

Don’t hang around here!  Go here:

http://drhorrible.com/

Go there NOW.  Waste no time.  Do not pass go.  Do not collect $200*.  Go.  And rejoice.  And then spread the word.  He says to!  The Man!  Joss Whedon!  Read all about it here:

http://drhorrible.com/plan.html

And especially pay attention to the ‘for one week only’ part!

Now hurry up and go!**

* * *

*Surely it’s more than that now?  Inflation and all.

** And the Super Heroine of the day is jmeadows who, it must be said, has been a heroine at least twice before, and is a grisly little overachiever, but we don’t care.  We kiss her hands and feet for sending us this link.

And anybody else reading this who already knew about it AND DIDN’T TELL ME, Bad Horse is going to knock on your door any minute now, and his Death Whinny, well. . . .

*loff loff loff*

I watched the second part today. Ohhh, Dr. Horrible! *pets him*

And…I bought an iTunes card just so I could keep it forever. (Four bucks for all three videos if you get the whole package.) I want to listen to the freeze ray song over and over.

“You make me feel, what’s the phrase? Like a fool, kind of sick, special needs…”

I’m going to train Jeff to sing it to me.

*overachieves*

Comment by Robin

Go for it! :)

Yes, I just watched part two before I posted. Yaaaaay for sick senses of humour. Yaaaaay!

The link was posted to a couple of library listservs by several different people today. Lots of librarians love Joss Whedon! And he and his whole cast will apparently be at the San Diego Comic-Con International and perform live at the Dark Horse Comics booth. Should be great fun for all there.

Comment by Robin

For the first, and I hope only, time in my life, I WANT to go to a con. . . .

I went to SDCC last year. (fFor work! Seriously!) You could not get near any Whedon-related events without a multi-hour wait; I fear to think of the crowd around the Dark Horse Booth if the above is true… Really, it was literally 10,000 people in line to hear him give a keynote speech. It broke my heart to be that close to the man and not get to see him talk, but jayzus….

If you’ve not seen this shirt before, you might enjoy it–it’s suited more for us disgruntled Star Wars fans, mind you.

Thanks for this link, I will continue to spread the gospel–

********** Of course. 10,000 people. Joss Whedon. Of course. Okay, I can *stop* eating my heart out that I won’t be going to Comic con. I don’t *think* there’s anything on earth that would make me wait in a queue for hours. And, much as I love the man, Joss Whedon isn’t it either.

And the t shirt makes me laugh all right but I’m NOT GOING TO WEAR IT. :)

Actually, they have a whole panel to themselves. Yeah, this is one time I REALLY want to go as well. And I was an Eisner judge back in 2005 and couldn’t go then either (CCI doesn’t pay for the judges to go). Now I’m looking forward to Saturday and seeing Act III – should be a hoot.

Comment by Wenna

And you should go to the San Diego Comic-Con. We went the year ‘Serenity’ came out in the theaters. It was a wonderful time.

I wish we were going this year! We’re not huge Con people, but it was such fun.

Comment by Black Bear

Yeah, I’ve been going to one of the largest hobby cons in the world (GenCon) for 15 years now, and yet the SDCC completely blew me away. The sheer size alone is just mindboggling. My coworker quite literally stood in line for over 2 hours to see a preview of the season premiere of “Heroes” last year…. And frankly, there is nothing/no one that would make me queue for that long these days. The mere line to pick up your badge–pick it up, mind you, if you’d pre-bought it via the internet–was easily a half mile long, 4-6 people wide. In fact, here’s a picture: http://www.flickr.com/photos/68068329@N00/981271908/in/set-72157601183262313/
Imagine a line going all the way across the front of that convention center, and then up and around a maze inside as well. Unbe-friggin-lievable. :) So I’m not surprised Joss’ll be there, and I wish I could go–but I’ve got no illusions I’d actually get to hear him speak if I did. I’ll make do with the online version!

Comment by Robin

Thank you very much. You’ve cured me *cold* of any desire to go. :)

Comment by anne_d

I haven’t been to a con since Eldest Daughter was, I don’t know, two or three. She’s nineteen now. Too many people in too small a space.

A friend of The Husband’s goes on a BtVS cruise thing every year; it’s apparently very expensive, but also more exclusive.

I do, however, own a “Joss Whedon is my Master now” shirt, and wear it around town. Occasionally someone will ask me who Joss Whedon is. I say, “Buffy? Angel? Firefly? Serenity?”, and if they haven’t got it by then, I give up.

I really want to see Doctor Horrible, but I’ll wait for the DVD, the PC being the nasty tempermental prone-to-meltdowns creature it is. It does sound like something worth anticipating.

Oh that was wonderful! I watched part 1 and 2–I was afraid I would be locked out of part 1 but it played for me. And now I must face that I–I–I might love an evil man. Even if Captain Hammer does have, well, you know.

This is so great, Robin! Thank you so much for turning us on to it!

Comment by Robin

Isn’t Captain Hammer WONDERFUL? I think I like him better as a jerk than as a hero in FIREFLY. And I **particularly** like him having to come back and tell our guy WHAT his hammer IS. **giggles insanely**

(Comments won't nest below this level)

Comment by Ellie

I think that his hero in Firefly is part of what makes his jerk here so funny. I especially loved the montage of him beating up Dr. Horrible for the tourists.

Comment by Robin

Very likely. Part of it probably is that he *can*. Like every time you catch somebody you ALREADY admire doing something ELSE well TOO. (Also: see ARRRRRGH. :))

Well, poo — I missed the chance to comment on the Connie pictures on-topic because I haven’t been around in awhile. She’s a lovely mare. I especially like the way her ears are paying attention to her rider — a very nice thing in a horse! And she’s very pretty — you really have to stop leading us to have low expectations for your animal friends! :-)

*****(And correct me if I’m wrong, but isn’t that a FEMALE dog they keep calling ‘he’?)*****

Yes, that annoyed me too. The human part of the partnership corrected the guys backstage at the end of the clip. It’s not like it’s that hard to tell with dogs…

Judith

Comment by Robin

I didn’t make it to the end of the clip, the announcers were so annoying. Which is a pity, because the dog is darling, as all those eager dancing dogs are. Border collies when they’ve discovered their ‘job’ in life are irresistable.

Oh, that was awesome! Shiny new Australia for me!

(Totally off-topic: does it make any difference to you whether we buy your books in paper or electronic versions? Because I just found The Blue Sword on Fictionwise.* And it’s one of my comfort books that I want on planes.)

* Ace version. They also have Dragonhaven, but nothing else. You don’t happen to know where they might have everything else, do you? I want Sunshine!

Comment by Robin

I’m not aware that BLUE SWORD is supposed to be on electronic. Hang on while I check, please?

(Comments won't nest below this level)

Comment by chiquitar

Are you aware that there is a pirated electronic version of many of your books out there? Don’t yell at me; I’ve purchased (often multiple) physical copies of everything you’ve written that I can find. But releasing an ebook version could be something that people are looking for. (I have a small lightweight pocketpc that I like to read on during my travels or in a ziplock bag in the bath. Works with one hand and weighs much less than a large bookshelf to carry around.) It could make you money or it could make it easier on the pirates. Hard to say. I am anti-DRM so I know that it is relatively simple to take locked-down books I paid for and strip the Digital Rights Management off of them so I don’t have to buy them again the third time the computer crashes or I buy a new computer or microsoft or whoever stops supporting my pocketpc. If I were to do this, however, I would not distribute them after doing so. Others would. Digital rights management is a very sticky subject. Right now your pirated books are extremely difficult to find, which might change if an ebook was released. The world needs a more satisfactory way to deal with this subject than we have right now.

Comment by Robin

No I did NOT know, and I’ve just copied and pasted yours to Merrilee (my agent).

Comment by Melissa Siah

Of course. There’s no particular hurry. We’re House Shopping at the moment, so I don’t have to fly anywhere more traumatic than Canberra or Sydney (which are a whole hour away) any time soon.

It’s rather oddly priced, actually, neither paperback nor hardcover equivalent. Is it a trade paperback re-issue, perhaps?

Melissa
(contemplating her paperback copy and thinking that an extra copy on paper probably wouldn’t go amiss either)

Comment by Robin

I’ve written Merrilee who is also a bit startled, and who will investigate. This sort of thing *does* happen in the big bad publishing world. They do stuff and forget to tell you.

Comment by Melissa Siah

On the topic of DRM and piracy,* there are a number of things that can be done to reduce the risk.** One of those things*** is this blog – it’s much, much harder for people to fool themselves that you’re so rich that you’ll never notice the lack of royalties when they can read about your life and roses and dentists and hellhounds right here. Especially dentists. And if they’re so obsessed that they have to read your books _right now_ instead of waiting to go to the bookstore or the library, you can safely bet that they’re going to read this. (After all, it does turn up on the first page of Google results in its own right, and there’s a link from your website.)

But yes, I’d like to put in my vote for e-books as well. DRM-free if possible, but as chiquitar pointed out, it doesn’t actually stop anyone with half a brain. (It’s usually illegal to not-be-stopped, of course, but then copying the book would be illegal in the first place.)

My recommendation, for what it’s worth, is not to worry too much about piracy. Sure, there’s a risk that your books will be more easily pirated if they’re sold in e-book form. But they’re out there in paper form in libraries and second-hand bookshops and people’s houses and so on. And we’ve had photocopiers _forever_.

* Which in this case I’m using as shorthand to indicate activities that constitute breach of copyright. Because it’s quicker to type.

**Without making it impossible for fans to actually buy the thing.+

+Which doesn’t work all that well anyway – IIRC Harry Potter 7 was scanned-pictures-on-the-web several days before actual release. And afterwards, a team of Chinese kids organised a round-the-clock typing session that took less than 48 hours to get a full text copy up. If you’re madly popular and sell paper copies, odds are that there’ll be pirate copies out there. On the other hand, if you end up as rich as JK Rowling, you might be too busy on a well-fenced horse farm to care…

*** The others are a bit more complicated, but we can talk about them off-line if you like. The trick with those is that your publishers need to be convinced.

Comment by Robin

Zowie. Okay. Well, I like the idea that this blog is FINALLY GOOD FOR SOMETHING. I told you, didn’t I, that the *current* publishing thinking is that blogs are NOT worthwhile as stirring the zeitgeist toward a given author? Sigh. Yes, dentists, and attic floors. I was talking to a friend who is building a house–an entire house from scratch–she’s my age, and I was saying that I RESENT being my/our age and still having to sweat something as comparatively minor league as a loft conversion. Yes, Peter and I have THREE houses between us, but all three of them would fit in ONE of my friend’s, and she’s not wealthy. . . .

If you have the time and patience, I’d be very interested in what else you can tell me about all this. **Sigh.** This is the sort of mixed blessing that the blog is too: all this stuff is so much more in my face than it used to be.

Comment by chiquitar

Oh dear, I hope Merrilee does not come arrest me! =-O

Be sure to let us know if you do have a contract with Fictionwise. I’m not buying anything from them until I know they are paying their royalties.

On the contrary, you will be given a medal. Stay tuned. And thanks.

I heard about this on NPR today, and I remembered that there was a link for it here… what a crazy random happenstance!

Waiting eagerly for episode 3… if it’s even half as awesome as the first two I know I won’t be disappointed. I can’t get those songs out of my head.

AAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHH! This is just cruel. I want to watch, but when I click on Act I and Act II, it tells me, “This video not available on this site.” What the heck?! I can follow the link to buy it on iTunes, but my iPod doesn’t do video. I thought all episodes were supposed to be available until midnight on the 20th. Maybe there are just too many people watching right now or something. I guess I’ll try again later. C’est la vie.

I loved everything about Dr. Horrible except how soon it was over.

On the bright side, the LA Times says:

Whedon jokingly admitted that the idea of a follow up had crossed his mind.

“We’re too busy talking about the giant Broadway adaptation, the much longer film version and the musical commentary that we’re writing now.” (As in, a sung DVD commentary.)

“But have I thought up the sequel?” he answers. “Yeah, sort of.”

Also, has everyone here heard that Whedon has written another show (The Dollhouse) for tv?

Comment by Robin

Not this everyone. Please tell/link all.

(Comments won't nest below this level)

Comment by CJ

Apparently he was having lunch with Eliza Dushku and thought it up in the midst of their conversation. It’s going to be on Fox (which will give all the Firefly devotees a vague sense of panic.) but hopefully lessons have been learned since the last go round.

Eliza Dushku, formerly Faith from Buffy, will star.

Along with Joss Whedon, Jed Whedon, and Maurissa Tancharoen (Dr Horrible, anyone?) are on the writing staff. Also Tim Minear, who worked on both Angel and Firefly.

The main character has her memory wiped so that she can be programmed with the memories, skills and personality to do/be anything a client wants. When not programmed for an assignment she lives among other similar folks in the ‘Dollhouse’ all mind-wiped, basically. At least at first. What happens when she stops forgetting everything she’s supposed to forget will be the story.

It’s already in production, but won’t air until January. There’s no official website up yet, but there are (of course) sites created by frenzied fans, and a number of interviews and casting updates floating around.

Comment by Robin

Well, if you’d be so kind as to keep us updated, I’d be glad. I just won’t remember/have time to check. Although gods know when it might make it to England.
